Quota system under discussion for vehicle imports

The Government is currently holding discussions with vehicle Importers to enter into a common consensus to import vehicles under certain restrictions in the future.

According to the Aruna Newspaper, a special discussion with stakeholders of the vehicle imports industry was held on 04th March.
The discussion was held under the aegis of President’s Secretary Professor P. B. Jayasundara, with the participation of the Finance Ministry Secretary, other high-ranking officials from the Government, and industry professionals.

During the discussion, attention was focused on allowing vehicle importers to import vehicles under a special quota protecting the foreign exchange rate, to set a cap on the maximum Dollar rate for the importation quota, and to provide the opportunity to registered and new vehicle importers.

The Government had provided a period of two weeks for vehicle importers to submit further proposals and to draw a final decision on the matter.

A temporary ban was imposed on the importation of vehicles due to the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020, with a view to reduce the gap in the exchange rate of the foreign currency.
