Mahara Prison unrest: 50 inmates receive lenient sentences

Gampaha District Judge Ravindra Ranjan Bandara has sentenced 50 inmates who pleaded guilty for offences committed at the Mahara Prison unrest to two months of lenient imprisonment.

The inmates accused of leaving the prison cells without permission, rioting, causing damages to property and attempting to flee from the prison.

Under the Prisons Ordinance, the case which was filed against 62 inmates was taken up before the Gampaha District Judge today (26).

The 12 inmates who pleaded not guilty to the charges were remanded until 08 February.
