Sri Lanka Pushes for Lower Tariffs on Exports

Sri Lanka is currently in discussions with the United States to further reduce reciprocal tariff rates imposed on Sri Lankan exports, according to National People's Power (NPP) MP Padmasiri Bandara.

Speaking to media following a public event held in Anuradhapura, Bandara emphasized that the government is actively working to secure more favorable trade terms for Sri Lankan producers, particularly in light of past criticisms from the opposition.

“The opposition has repeatedly claimed that the U.S. is using tariffs to pressure the government and restrict its policy direction. But we’ve proven otherwise,” Bandara said. “We’ve already reduced the tariff rate from 44% to 30%, and then further down to 20% following negotiations. Talks are still ongoing to bring it even lower.”
