Kandy Tremor report issued - special recommendations included

Geological survey and Mines Bureau says that an uninterrupted long term surveillance programme should be speedily implemented since earth tremors had taken place within a short period in the same zone in Kandy.

The expert report on the tremor in Digana, Kandy was handed over to Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera yesterday.

The committee had said that although according to these facts a large amount of lime stone was found in the area it could not be said that the tremor had occurred due to limestone mining.

In their report, the geologists have pointed out that further research should be done on seismicity and have included recommendations that should be implemented for the safety of reservoirs and people in the area.

It is also proposed to deploy a team of geologists to compile a detailed geological and structural map, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Environment. It states that the observations made during the crack survey should be further surveyed and re-evaluated with the required geological applications.

Recommendations have also been made to install seismic equipment, especially on the Victoria Dam.

The Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera stated that a program will be launched for the protection of Victoria Reservoir as well as all other reservoirs.

The Minister said that the report had shown that the dam of the Victoria Reservoir had not been damaged due to the recent earthquake.
