Leftover Food from Ships and Planes Leads to African Swine Fever Outbreak in Sri Lankan Farms
The Department of Animal Production and Health has identified that leftover and discarded food items as the primary cause of the outbreak of African Swine Fever in farms.
Director General of the Department of Animal Production and Health, Hemali Kothalawala, said that the main factor contributing to the spread of the disease is the distribution of leftover food from passengers on ships and airplanes arriving from foreign countries.
She further highlighted that the distribution of such food scraps to pig farms, and its usage have led to the widespread outbreak of African Swine Fever in Sri Lankan farms.
