OIC raises concerns on SL Covid burials at UNHRC
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has requested the Government of Sri Lanka to halt forced cremations of Muslim Covid victims.
Secretary General of the OIC Dr. Yousef Al Othaimeen made the request when addressing the High-Level Segment of the 46th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council yesterday.
He further said that the OIC is keen on monitoring the situation of Muslim communities in non-OIC Members.
Dr. Yousef Al Othaimeen said as the Muslims in Sri Lanka are denied the right to bury the bodies of COVID-19 victims, the OIC is concerned over the community’s plight in Sri Lanka.
He pointed out that the burial of Muslim Covid victims follows the Islamic rules, while adhering to the guidelines of the World Health Organization.
Dr. Al Othaimeen said the OIC urges the Government of Sri Lanka to take swift action to guarantee and respect the right of burial of the Muslim community.
