Embassy in Moscow Addressing Mercenary Issue

The issue of Sri Lankan mercenaries reportedly involved in the conflict in Ukraine and Russia has come under the spotlight following reports of human trafficking ring that smuggled ex-servicemen to the conflict zone.

Russian Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Levan Dzhagaryan speaking in Colombo provided insights into the ongoing efforts to address this sensitive matter.

When questioned by a journalist about the status and potential release of Sri Lankan mercenaries fighting for Russia, Ambassador Dzhagaryan responded by emphasizing the collaborative efforts between the Russian Federation and Sri Lankan authorities.

"We work on that in close cooperation with the defense ministry. You mean only Sri Lankans fighting for Russia or Sri Lankans fighting for Ukraine? But why don't you ask about Sri Lankans fighting for Ukraine? You ask only for Russia's and keep silent about Ukraine. Please don't. You can send your question to the Ukrainian embassy in Delhi. But to be serious, we are just working on it together with my colleagues in Moscow. I mean, this Sri Lankan embassy in Moscow is very active in this regard. We will continue our efforts with the government of Sri Lanka, with the defense ministry. Now, I'm not ready to go into details, but let's give us the possibility," said Dzhagaryan.

While specific details remain undisclosed, Ambassador Dzhagaryan assured that efforts are being made to address the situation in coordination with relevant authorities.
