Drone operations to commence to detect forest destruction

The Forest Conservation Department said drone operations will commence on Friday (14) to detect forest destruction.

Forest Conservation General Nishantha Edirisinghe said operations will commence in seven districts under the first phase.

Accordingly drone operations will commence in the Ratnapura, Hambantota, Ampara, Mullaitivu, Monaragala, Batticaloa, and Mannar districts.

Edirisinghe said specially trained officers and drones will be used for this operation.

He added that the operation will allow for persons engaged in forest cutting, illegal cultivation, and cannabis cultivation as well as other illegal activities to be identified, and for legal action to be taken against them.
