Party Leaders Meet to Discuss No-Confidence Motion Against Speaker.

The party leaders will gathered for a crucial meeting to deliberate on the no-confidence motion filed against Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.

The meeting aims to address the pressing issue within the legislative framework.

Deputy Speaker Ajith Rajapakse emphasized that a comprehensive discussion on the motion, as well as the parliament agenda for the coming week will take place.

In the first week of March, a coalition of opposition Members of Parliament submitted a motion of no confidence against Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.

44 opposition Members of Parliament submitted a motion of no confidence against Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.

Ranjith Madduma Bandara, Secretary General of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, personally handed over the document to Deputy Secretary General Chaminda Kularatne.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, Samagi Jana Balawegaya MPs, Maithripala Sirisena from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, Dayasiri Jayasekara from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and M. A. Sumanthiran from the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi, signed the motion.

In addition, MPs Representing the Freedom People's Congress group Dullas Alahapperuma, Professor GL Peiris, Professor Charitha Herath, as well as Wasantha Yapa Bandara, along with Jathika Jana Balavegaya MP Vijitha Herath signed the motion.

The heart of the motion lies in the alleged violation of constitutional principles when passing the Online Safety Act.

The opposition contends that certain clauses were pushed through despite objections, whilst also disregarding the recommendations made by the Supreme Court.

The motion notes that the faith in the speaker in Parliament has collapsed.
