Number of underweight children increases compared to 2022.

The Ministry of Health said the number of underweight school children has increased to 19.5 percent this year, compared to 21 percent last year.

The Family Health Bureau said obesity among school children has also increased from 1.4 to 2.7 percent.

The Family Health Bureau said the lack of adequate nutrition for children due to the economic issues of the recent past has led to an increase in underweight children.

Director Dr. Chithramalee De Silva said attention has been directed to raising awareness regarding the nutritional status of children, in line with School Health Promotion Month.

She added that the School Health Promotion Month is being held under the theme "Suwa diviyai - Sathutu sithayi" which losely translates to "A healthy life - A happy mind.

Specialist Dr. Chithramalee De Silva said parents have a great responsibility to provide proper nutrition for their children.
