Police and STF to Protect Wild Elephants from Poachers

The Sri Lankan government has announced plans to involve the Police and the Special Task Force (STF) in wildlife protection operations, in a move to combat the illegal killing of elephants and other wild animals.

Minister of Environment, Dr. Dammika Patebandi, stated that the decision was made following a discussion with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who provided specific directives on strengthening enforcement against wildlife crimes.

As part of the broader initiative, the Department of Wildlife Conservation is set to recruit 200 new wildlife officers to bolster its field presence.

Additionally, the Ministry has approved the purchase of 100 cabs and 150 motorcycles to enhance the mobility and operational capacity of wildlife officers across the country.
