Six arrested over Canadian student visa scam.
Six suspects have been arrested for financially defrauding the public under the guise of providing student visas to Canada.
The Police stated that the group was apprehended following investigations conducted by the Colombo Financial Crimes Unit based on several complaints received in this regard.
Obtaining a search warrant from the Fort Magistrate’s Court, the Police officers had yesterday raided a building in Kadawatha operating a business that provides fake documentation for the visa process.
The Police officers had seized several items, including 03 desktop computers, 03 laptops, 04 printers, 01 scanner, several financial statements, bank passbooks, fake documentation, official seals, and Rs. 1, 187,130 in cash.
The arrested suspects include a 65-year-old man from Seeduwa and five women aged 47, 45, 31, 28 and 23 years, from the Wattala, Ragama, and Kelaniya areas.
Investigations have revealed that the group had created fake documentation, including financial statements and assets declarations for individuals seeking overseas visas.
The suspects will be produced before the Fort Magistrate’s Court today.
