Bill to abolish death penalty for those under 18 years of age
Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has signed the Penal Code Amendment Bill and the Young Offenders Amendment Bill.
The Penal Code Amendment Bill provides for the detention of a person under the age of 18 in a detention center without pronouncing or reporting the death penalty at the time of the offense.
The Juvenile Offenders Amendment Bill redefines the term youth as someone who has completed eighteen years of age but has not completed 22 years of age.
