Celebrate Women's Day With These 5 Movies with Female Characters Standing Up for Themselves

Women’s Day is around the corner and even though the sexist, misogynistic slurs directed at ladies and girls around the world seem far from over, you can always treat yourself to some movies that depict how you are not alone. Stories of fellow women have been told by some of the most talented filmmakers, writers, actors and other artists. Watching one such movie might just be exactly what you need instead of your male counterparts patronising you.

So here are some movies that you should consider watching, if you haven’t already, on Women’s Day or any day if you want to see a lady telling her story:

Lady Bird (2017):Written and directed by Academy Award nominee Greta Gerwig, Lady Bird is a story about a rebellious teenager, played by Saoirse Ronan who wishes to fit into the popular group in school and ultimately wants to leave her sleepy town of Sacramento for higher studies. The movie also portrays the complex relationship Lady Bird has with her mother, played by Laurie Metaclf, who wants her daughter to stay in the city and go to community college. Saoirse’s performance in the movie won her the Golden Globe for best actress in a musical or a comedy role.

Frances Ha (2012):Starring Greta Gerwig, Frances Ha is a story of a woman who wants to make it big in New York. Filmed in grayscale, the movie is also about the friendship of two women who are sharing an apartment in New York as they struggle through their lives. The movie is directed by Gerwig’s real life partner Noah Baumbach.

happad (2020):A hard-hitting movie on the social issue of dometic violence against women, Thappad stars Taapsee Pannu as a regular housewife who loves her husband until he slaps her in public. The movie talked about an issue that is usually ignored by many people. Directed by Anubhav Sinha, the movie portrays how a woman decides to stand up for herself when her dignity is compromised in a relationship.

Lipstick Under My Burkha (2016): This movie is a story of four women from all walks of lifewith one thing in common, thirst for freedom. The movie highlights various aspects of patriarchy in a small town of India and how these women steal their own little moments of liberation, sexually. The movie stars Konkana Sen Sharma, Ratna Pathak Shah, Plabita Borthakur, Aahana Kumra and is directed by Alankrita Shrivastava.

Colette (2018):If you are looking for a classic period drama starring Keira Knightley, then Colette is a perfect choice. The movie is based on a true story of a French novelist Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette who wrote some of the bestselling novels but since she was a woman, her work was published under her husband’s name.
