Inquiry into the suspended Rambewa and Welikanda Pradeshiya Sabha Chairmen

Chairman of the Rambewa Pradeshiya Sabha Ajith Prasanna Tennakoon states that the suspension of his chairmanship is the result of a political conspiracy.

Speaking to Hiru news team he stated that his chairmanship has been suspended due to a preferential vote issue that arose during the last general election.

Governor of the North Central Province Maheepala Herath has issued a special gazette notification suspending the Chairman of the Rambewa Pradeshiya Sabha Ajith Prasanna Tennakoon and assigning the Deputy Chairman of the Pradeshiya Sabha to carry out those functions and exercise the powers.

Also, retired High Court Judge Saman Wickrama Wickramarachchi has been empowered to conduct an inquiry into whether the suspended Chairman has committed any offense under the Pradeshiya Sabha Act. The relevant report should be submitted within 3 months.

Chairman of the Rambewa Pradeshiya Sabha Ajith Prasanna Tennakoon stated that although he was removed due to political pressure, he was ready to face any investigation. He also said that he did not know the reason for his removal.

Meanwhile, the Governor of the North Central Province issued a gazette notification last night temporarily removing Priyantha Kamidu Abeysuriya from the post of Chairman of the Polonnaruwa - Welikanda Pradeshiya Sabha. Retired High Court Judge Saman Wickrama Wickramarachchi has been appointed to conduct an inquiry on this matter as well.

Welikanda Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Priyantha Kamidu Abeysuriya also stated that he has not yet been informed of the charges against him.
