Organized Crime Behind 50 Shootings, Say Sri Lanka Police
A total of 68 shooting incidents have been reported across Sri Lanka in the first seven months of 2025, resulting in 37 fatalities and 39 injuries, according to Police Spokesperson Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) F. U. Wootler.
ASP Wootler stated that 50 of the 68 shootings were directly linked to organized criminal networks, while the remaining 18 were related to personal disputes and land-related conflicts.
Of the 37 individuals killed, 34 were identified as members of organized crime groups, with the remaining three deaths stemming from unrelated incidents.
Police investigations have led to the arrest of 24 suspected shooters, along with 15 motorcycle riders believed to have assisted in the attacks.
Additionally, 150 individuals suspected of providing logistical or operational support to these shootings have also been taken into custody.
Between January 1 and June 10, 2025, police recovered a significant cache of illegal firearms, including:
23 T-56 assault rifles
46 pistols
30 revolvers
1,165 other locally manufactured or improvised weapons
The most recent shooting occurred on July 11 in Ganemulla, where five bullets struck a private residence.
Investigations revealed that the homeowner, a Sri Lankan national employed as a visa officer in Dubai, may have been targeted due to rivalries among organized crime figures. Multiple police teams, including the Ganemulla Police, are actively pursuing leads in the case.
In a parallel development, ASP Wootler also highlighted the success of a nationwide anti-narcotics operation conducted jointly by the Sri Lanka Police, Tri-Forces, and Special Task Force.
From January 1 to July 11, 2025, authorities arrested over 106,000 individuals on drug-related charges. Seized narcotics during this period include:
922 kg of heroin
1,386 kg of crystal meth (ICE)
10,895 kg of cannabis
22 kg of cocaine
329 kg of hashish
A separate three-month special operation launched on April 13 under the directive of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) led to the seizure of:
302 kg of heroin
104 kg of ICE
2,641 kg of cannabis
35,442 legal cases filed
