People living along the coasts in the Northern and Eastern Provinces and who are at risk of hurricanes have been evacuated to temporary camps.

Eastern Province Governor Anuradha Yahampath has instructed the relevant Divisional Secretaries to constantly inquire into the facilities required by these people.

Accordingly, the Governor stated that the necessary financial allocations have been made to provide relief to the people in the event of any disaster due to the cyclone.

A statement issued by the Meteorological Department states that the cyclone is located 200 km east of Trincomalee as  at 8.30am today.

The Meteorological Department expects the cyclone to enter the country between 7.00 to 10.00 pm off the northeast coast.

The statement issued by the Meteorological Department at 12 noon is as follows;

The cyclonic storm ‘ BUREVI’ over the south-west Bay of Bengal, lay centered near latitude 8.6°N and longitude 83.0°E, about 200 km east-southeast of Trincomalee at 0830 hrs today (02nd December).

The system is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north-eastern coast of Sri Lanka between Trincomalee and Point-Pedro, close to Mullaithivu around tonight(within 7.00 p.m-10.00 p.m on 02 December )

This Cyclonic strom with a wind speed of 75-85 kmph gusting up to 95 kmph and it is very likely to move nearly westwards thereafter, emerge into Gulf of Mannar.

Intemittent showers/thundershowers will occur in the Northern and North-western provinces.

Very heavy rainfall above 150mm can be expected at some places.

Showers or thundershowers at times will occur in the Eastern, North-central, Western, Central and sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle and Matara districts. Heavy rainfall about 100mm can be expected at some places.

Strong gusty winds (60-70) kmph can be expected in Northern, North-Central, North-Western, Western, Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces.

Strong winds (40-50) kmph can be expected elsewhere.
