Cabinet approves amendment to increase fines under Convention against torture Act

The cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to amend the fines imposed under the Convention against torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment act no 22 of 1994.

Cabinet Co-Spokesman Minister Udaya Gammanpila said torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment is explicitly prohibited by Article 11 of the Constitution.

He further said it has been identified that fines in the Convention should be revised to suit the current era in order to condemn and punish people committing such offences.

Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal presented by Minister of Justice Ali Sabry to amend the Registration of documents Ordinance as recommended by the Legal Commission and to advice the legal draftsman to prepare bills for this purpose.
