Committee appointed to probe tremors in the central hills

A committee of experts was appointed to conduct an extensive study into the minor tremors experienced around the Victoria Reservoir.

The 11 member committee will be chaired by Anura Walpola, the Chairman of the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau.

The committee will also comprise Professor Athula Senaratne, Major General S. Ranasinghe, Wasantha Ihalapitiya, Professor Jagath Gunathilake, Professor R. K. Perera, Dr. O. K. Dissanayake, Nalin De Silva, Dr. Gamini Jayatissa, Mahinda Seneviratne, and Nilmini Thaldena.

The objective of appointing the committee is to ascertain the cause of the tremors experienced in the recent past.

In addition, the committee will also explore the possibility of minimizing the damage that may be caused by any future situations.

Environment Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe appointed the committee on the instructions of Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.
