Army Commander responds to Colombo Mayor’s lockdown request

The COVID Task Force says there is no requirement to impose a complete lockdown on the Colombo district once again.

Head of the Task Force Army Commander Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva told NewsWire that the coronavirus outbreak is being monitored and reviewed on a daily basis.

“New Covid cases are only being detected from areas already placed in isolation in the Colombo district. Cases are not being detected from areas that are not under lockdown in the district,” he said.

Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva said that the best option has been implemented currently to prevent a further spread of the virus and that is by isolating the areas which are under threat.

The Army Commander’s comments come in response to Colombo Mayor Rosy Senanayake’s recent calls to impose a 3-week complete lockdown on Colombo as the district poses a risk for the further spread of the coronavirus.

Senanayake pointed out that that Colombo has been identified as a hot spot and a large number of Covid cases are continuing to be detected.
