Initial CID investigations clear Brandix of quarantine violations

Police Investigations conducted so far have not found any evidence to suggest that private apparel company Brandix had violated quarantine regulations, according to the Police.

Acting Police Chief C.D. Wickramaratne reportedly mentioned this in a letter addressed to Attorney General (AG) Dappula de Livera yesterday (18), briefing the latter on the progress of the on-going Police investigations into the coronavirus cluster detected at the Brandix apparel factory in Minuwangoda in October.

The acting IGP has said initial investigations conducted by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) into the matter had cleared Brandix of any violations of quarantine regulations.

The CID has handed over an interim report of the investigation in this regard, he said.

The acting Police Chief further noted that a research conducted by the Sri Jayawardenepura University into the outbreak had found that the coronavirus cluster detected at the Brandix factory in Minuwangoda had commenced from a strain of the COVID-19, possibly spread in Europe.

The Attorney General was informed that the CID is conducting investigations into this aspect.

The acting IGP said the CID has also been instructed to conduct further investigations to identify patient-zero linked to the cluster that was detected at the Brandix apparel factory in Minuwangoda.

The CID has been ordered to submit a report promptly on the investigation to identify patient-zero linked to the Minuwangoda cluster, he added in the letter to the Attorney General.
