Maize shortage threatens poultry production ahead of festive season
Delays in granting approval for maize imports could result in an increase in chicken meat and egg prices during the upcoming festive season, according to the All Island Poultry Association of Sri Lanka.
The President of the Association, Ajith Gunasekara, stated that the use of rice as a substitute for maize in animal feed has led to a significant decline in poultry meat and egg production.
He further noted that approximately 20% of small-scale poultry producers have withdrawn from the industry due to the severe shortage of maize.
