Supreme Court Invalidates Decision to Grant Free Marks in Grade 5 Scholarship Exam; Final Decision to Be Announced yesterday
The Department of Examinations says that the final decision regarding the actions to be taken concerning the first paper of the recent scholarship examination will be announced yesterday.
Commissioner General of Examinations, Amith Jayasundara, said that the decision will be promptly made public.
The Supreme Court yesterday ruled that fundamental rights have been violated by the decision to grant free marks for three questions on the first paper of the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination, which led to a major controversy in the country.
The Supreme Court ordered the Commissioner General of Examinations to choose the most suitable option among three recommendations proposed by the expert committee: grant free marks for the problematic questions, entirely cancel the three questions, or conduct a re-examination, and to implement it immediately.
A petition was filed before the Supreme Court by a group of students who faced the 2024 Grade 5 Scholarship Examination and their parents, requesting an interim injunction ordering the Commissioner General of Examinations to annul the first part of the question paper, and to conduct a re-examination.
The decision to grant free marks for these three questions in the first part of the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination held on September 15, 2024, was made after it was revealed that these questions had been leaked prior to the examination.
After considering this petition, the Supreme Court today ruled that fundamental rights were violated as a result of this decision.
