Three prison officers interdicted after inmates escape
Three officers at the Angunakolapelessa Prison have been interdicted following the escape of four inmates on October 1, 2024.
The incident had occurred after ten inmates were reportedly taken out of the prison for cleaning activities in the premises outside the prison without the approval of the Prison Superintendent.
The Chief Jailer had arranged for the ten prisoners to be taken outside to clean the outer premises, during which four inmates had escaped custody, said the Prisons Spokesperson.
The escaped prisoners include individuals with pending court cases, one of whom has a 21-year sentence and two pending cases.
Meanwhile, three of the escaped inmates have been recaptured, while one still remains at large, the spokesman said.
The Chief Jailer and two other officers including a secondar jailor and a guard have been suspended pending further investigation into the incident.
