Special Meeting on VIP Security & Threats To VIPs
A special meeting regarding the security of VIPs, including former Presidents, has been convened for this afternoon at the Ministry of Public Security.
Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya stated that the meeting will be chaired by the Minister of Public Security, Vijitha Herath.
The agenda includes a review of the current security threats faced by VIPs.
Additionally, several key decisions related to VIP security are expected to be made during the meeting.
Last week, Sri Lanka Police announced the withdrawal of security provided to former Members of Parliament.
According to Police Spokesperson, Deputy Inspector General of Police and Attorney-at-Law Nihal Thalduwa, only the former Speaker, former Deputy Speaker, and the Leader of the Opposition will continue to receive police protection.
Additionally, the Police Spokesperson stated that former MPs facing specific threats or issues will be provided with police security as needed.
Acting Inspector General of Police, Deputy Inspector General Priyantha Weerasooriya, also announced that officers currently assigned to VIP security will be reassigned to regular duties.
