Indian National Sentenced for Match-Fixing

The Kandy High Court has sentenced an Indian national to a suspended prison term after he pleaded guilty to charges of match-fixing.

The charges stem from a match-fixing incident during the Legend Cricket Trophy 2024, held at Pallekele Cricket Stadium from March 8 to 19, 2024.

The investigation was initiated following a complaint by the International Cricket Council's (ICC) anti-corruption unit to the Special Investigation Unit for the Prevention of Offenses Related to Sports.

The police revealed that during the investigation, it was discovered that an English player and a New Zealand player, both part of the Punjab Royal team, had been approached to fix matches.

The Attorney General's Department subsequently filed an indictment in the Kandy High Court, naming the Indian national as the accused in relation to match-fixing and suggesting match-fixing.

During the court proceedings, the accused Indian national pleaded guilty to both charges.

As a result, the Kandy High Court judge imposed a fine of 5.5 million rupees for each charge.

Additionally, the judge sentenced the accused to a suspended prison term of 10 years, with hard labor for two years for each charge.
