Inaugural Parliamentary Council meeting held at Speaker's residence

The inaugural meeting of the Parliamentary Council established under the 20th Amendment to the Constitution convened yesterday (04) at the Speaker's official residence.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, Prime Minister's nominee Minister Douglas Devananda and MP Kabir Hashim nominated by the Leader of the Opposition, the Secretary-General of Parliament and other officials were present at the meeting.

The Secretary-General of Parliament elaborated on the legal framework and the functional aspects of the Council in accordance with the 20th Amendment followed by the instructions given by the Speaker.

Following a lengthy discussion, the Council members had arrived at a mutual agreement on the steps to be taken pertaining to the future functional aspects to be followed by the Parliamentary Council.

The Council is scheduled to reconvene on 10 November.
