Executive grade officers of university non-academic staff call off the strike

The executive grade officers of the university non-academic staff have called off the trade union action.

President of the Association W.M.W. Wanninayake said the strike action was called off based on an agreement signed with the Chairman of the University Grants Commission.

Accordingly, he said they will report to work from Monday (15).

The Ministry of Finance has once again informed that allowances for non-academic staff cannot be increased at this time.

Vice-Chairman of the University Grants Commission Prof. Chandana Udawatte said it was conveyed in writing on Thursday (11) by the Ministry of Finance, in response to a letter directed by the UGC.

The Finance Ministry further said the issue can be resolved through the committee appointed by the President to resolve salary discrepancies of government employees.

Prof. Udawatte said all Vice Chancellors and trade union leaders were informed in writing regarding the Finance Ministry decision.

In the same letter, UGC Chairman Senior Professor Sampath Amaratunge requested the striking trade unions to report to work immediately, adding that the issues can be resolved thereafter.

However, Co-Convener of the University Trade Union Joint Committee Dhammika S. Priyantha refused to accept the UGC Chairman's request.

Accordingly, he said the strike will continue for the 72nd day.
