KDU Lecturer Granted Bail After TID Arrest
The Terrorist Investigation Division has arrested a lecturer attached the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University for making false statements to the media regarding the ISIS members arrested in India.
The individual in questioned was identified as Dr. Punsara Amarasinghe.
He was released on a personal bail of Rs. 1 Million, after he was produced to the Fort Magistrate's Court.
Sri Lanka Police said that the lecturer recently stated to media that the Easter Sunday Attacks Commission report recommends that the men, suspected of being ISIS members and arrested in India, be directed to rehabilitation.
Dr. Punsara Amarasinghe, is a Academic Staff member of the Faculty of Law at the Kotelawala Defence University.
DIG Nihal Thalduwa said that when the TID summoned Dr. Punsara Amarasinghe for questioning, he had said he was unaware of the relevant details, and thus was arrested.
In a related development, the CID arrested two people in Bangadeniya, Chilaw for their alleged links with ISIS members.
Sri Lankan security forces suspect that an individual by the name of Osmand Gerrard acted as a handler of the four Sri Lankan men who were arrested in India, for suspected links with ISIS.
Sri Lanka Police recently announced a cash award of Rs. 2 Million, for any credible information on the whereabouts of the wanted suspect.
According to detectives, the two men arrested in Chilaw, are the younger siblings of Osmand Gerrard.
