Activist-turned actress Damitha Abeyratne was remanded to the 17th of April, after she was produced in court on Friday (5).

Damitha Abeyratne, a well-known activist and actress, along with her husband, were arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department on Thursday (4).

According to Police Spokesperson DIG Nihal Thalduwa, the couple faces charges related to a substantial fraud amounting to nearly Rs 3 million.

Allegedly, they falsely promised employment opportunities in South Korea.

Following a complaint lodged with the police headquarters by a resident of the Nugegoda area, an investigation was initiated against actress Damitha Abeyratne.

Damitha Abeyratne and her husband voluntarily appeared at the Fort Magistrate’s Court this afternoon, intending to surrender in connection with the incident.

However, the Police Spokesperson said that the court declined to accept their surrender.

Subsequently, as they were leaving the court premises, the Criminal Investigation Department took them into custody
