Probe into Substandard Drug Administration to Cancer Patients

Dr. Palitha Mahipala, Secretary of the Ministry of Health, has announced the commencement of investigations into an alarming incident involving the administration of substandard drugs to cancer patients.

The drug in question is 'Rituximab', which is used to treat certain types of cancer

Dr. Mahipala emphasized that such serious matters will be addressed with utmost severity.

In addition, Dr. Mahipala announced the immediate cessation of emergency purchases of medicines.

Last week, Sri Lankan prosecutors disclosed to the court that a counterfeit Rituximab drug was distributed to government hospitals in the recent past.

Deputy Solicitor General Lakmini Girihagama informed the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court that the same supplier responsible for Fake Human Immunoglobulin stock also provided this fraudulent Rituximab supply.
