Norochcholai Unit 3 ready, but not added to grid - CEB
The Ceylon Electricity Board said that the maintenance work on the 3rd Generator at the Norochcholai Power Plant is complete, however, it will not be added to the national grid anytime soon.
CEB Spokesperson Engineer Noel Priyantha told News 1st that this decision was reached as hydropower generation reached the required capacity.
He said that if the 3rd Generator at the Norochcholai Power Plant is to be added to the national grid now, an additional cost will have to be borne for the coal that will be required to operate the power plant.
As per the data made available by the CEB, the capacity of reservoirs close to hydropower plants has reached 97.7%.
On the 5th of December 2023, hydropower generation stood at 63%, while thermal power generation stood at 15.7%.
At the same time, the 2nd Generator at the Norochcholai Power Plant remains inactive.
