Three Police officers have been killed in two separate accidents reported in the last 24 hours ending at 06.00 am today.

A 45-year-old Police Officer was killed after being run over by a tipper truck near Puhuriya Junction in Polgahawela on the Colombo- Kurunegala Road last night.

The officer had been run over while he was engaged in the inspection of a vehicle along with two other Police officers.

The deceased has been identified as a 45-year-old Police Constable attached to the Polgahawela Police Station. 

The driver of the tipper truck has been arrested in connection to the accident. 

Meanwhile, two Police Special Task Force (STF) officers were killed and 5 officers injured in an accident reported in the Rambakulam area in Vavuniya last night.

The Police said the officers had been travelling in a Defender from the Madukandha camp towards Vavuniya Town when the vehicle struck a cow on the side of the road.

The driver of the vehicle is reported to have lost control of the vehicle after which it veered off the road and crashed into a wall.

The two STF officers who were killed in the accident are aged 29 and 31 years, and they are residents of Kurunegala and Medawachchiya.
