Banned pesticides used in Sri Lanka?

Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera has called for an urgent report to identify if internationally banned pesticides and weedicides are being used in Sri Lanka.

The Minister has instructed the Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture Gunadasa Samarasinghe to compile the report.

This is following a revelation made by a survey conducted by the Centre for Environmental Justice that 40 active ingredients are considered highly hazardous pesticides are among the permitted pesticides in Sri Lanka.

In the meantime, the Office of the Registrar of Pesticides said that the internationally banned pesticides have not been approved for use in Sri Lanka, adding that an investigation can be launched if the Centre for Environmental Justice provides the relevant report.
