Results of the four-day operation targeting motorcyclists

The Sri Lanka Police has decided to launch a four-day operation targeting motorcyclists due to the high number of deaths of motorcyclists and cyclists in road accidents islandwide.

Police Media Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana stated that 4,511 offences committed by motorcyclists were detected during the first 24 hours of the operation which commenced on 31 March.

One hundred and twenty-two (112) motorcyclists who were driving under the influence were also arrested.

In addition, 651 motorcyclists travelling without safety helmets and 1,121 motorcyclists violating various traffic regulations were identified during the operation.

DIG Ajith Rohana further stated that the main objective of this operation which will continue until 03 April is to save the lives of approximately five motorcyclists who die on the road on an average daily basis
