Special notice for vehicle owners from Police
A special three-day operation has been launched from today (22) to detect vehicles with worn-out tyres and other defects.
Police Spokesman, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajith Rohana said the special operation will be conducted by the Police to prevent motor accidents.
Stating that eight people are reported to have died in road accidents in the 24-hours ending at 06 am today, he said between 9-10 lives are lost due to accidents on a daily basis.
DIG Ajith Rohana said faults in vehicles have been identified as a key cause for the increasing road accidents.
Therefore, the Police Headquarters has issued special directions to launch an operation to detect vehicles with worn-out tyres.
The public have been requested to tend to the faults in their vehicles to cooperate and help prevent road accidents.
He pointed out that a person charged with a traffic offense of having worn-out tires could be fined an amount of Rs 3,500.
The Police Spokesman further said if a person is injured due to a vehicle with worn-out tyres, the offender could be imposed a fine of Rs 25,000.
