WATCH : “This is a disciplinary issue,” Sports Minister replies to Opposition on Chaminda Vaas’ resignation
An exchange of words occurred in Parliament today over the sudden resignation of former Sri Lanka cricketer Chaminda Vass from the post of fast bowling coach hours before the National team was set to leave for the West Indies.
Responding to a question raised by Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Thushara Indunil, Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa said the request of payment was not an issue for the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).
He pointed out the issue was with Chaminda Vass requesting a pay hike and submitting his resignation nearly four hours before the team was set to depart for the Caribbean.
“The issue here is that Chaminda Vass announced his decision and demand at 5.00pm, when the team was set to depart at 11 in the night on the same day. If the SLC had at that time agreed to his request, then tomorrow right before entering the pitch in South Africa another coach or a cricketer could make similar demands and threaten to withdraw. How will we face such a situation in the future? Therefore, we have a system in place and that must be followed,” he said. (NewsWire)
