SC to take up FR petition filed against appointment of SL’s first female DIG
A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court will take up for consideration a fundamental rights petition filed at the court seeking the annulment of the appointment of Sri Lanka’s first female Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG).
According to media reports, a group of senior Police officers have filed the petition challenging the appointment of DIG Bimshani Jasinghe Arachchi.
The petitioners claim DIG Arachchi’s appointment are contrary to the recruitment process for senior Police officers.
The petitioners further state a woman cannot hold the post of DIG in Sri Lanka, as the regulations pertaining to the appointment of women to the post of DIG do not provide for the use of the word ‘women’.
DIG Bimshani Jasinghe Arachchi’s appointment was sanctioned by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the National Police Commission
