MT-New Diamond: Discussions with AG over compensation for environmental pollution
The Marine Environmental Protection Authority (MEPA) has informed the Attorney General about the procedure to be taken to obtain compensation for the damage caused to the environment caused by the fuel of the MT-New Diamond vessel that caught fire in the Eastern Sea.
MEPA Chairperson Darshani Lahandapura told the Hiru News team that she would meet Attorney General Dappula de Livera next week to discuss the matter and take further steps.
A report prepared by a team of experts on the damage caused to the environment due to the fuel leak on the ship will also be handed over to the Attorney General.
The shipping company had previously taken action to compensate the ship's captain for pleading guilty to criminal charges.
Accordingly, the MEPA Chairperson further stated that another compensation or compensation should be made for the damage caused to the environment.
