SJB to contest upcoming elections from 'Samagi Jana Sandahanaya'

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya has decided to contest the forthcoming elections under a new symbol called the Samagi Jana Sandhanaya. The proposal was presented to the executive council of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya which met in Bandarawela on 19 December, and it was decided that a new alliance should be formed by uniting the other opposition parties.

The Executive Council of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya has also approved the draft constitution.

Accordingly, the new party constitution will be effective from 01 January, said Executive Committee member MP Ashok Abeysinghe.

According to the constitution of the party, the leadership of the party is elected by a general assembly that meets every year.

The party leadership cannot appoint members of the Working Committee at its discretion and its maximum number of members is 75.

The constitution of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya also includes a clause stating that the general decision-making powers of the party are vested with a party management committee.

The management committee and the party leadership have equal opportunities in appointing members to the party's executive council.

It is also noteworthy that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya Constitution does not appoint a Deputy Leader. However, the two posts of Chairman and Secretary-General were designated as higher posts in the administration.

When appointing electoral organizers, it must be subject to the full approval of the party's executive council and working committee.
