Sri Lanka seeks Rs 1.694 billion in damages from UK over garbage containers
Sri Lanka has filed a complaint with the Basel Convention Secretariat seeking damages for the importation of containers with garbage from the UK.
The Ministry of Environment said the Government has sought Rs. 1.694 Billion in damages.
The claim has been sought under the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal.
Sri Lanka had last month returned 21 containers of garbage to the United Kingdom.
The containers were part of 263 containers that were sent illegally to Sri Lanka from the UK in 2017.
Among the containers, 112 containers are at the Colombo Port and 130 in Katunayake, while a court case is underway in this regard.
