Only one tremor was reported from Kandy

The Environment Ministry stated that even though it was noted that four minor tremors were reported around Kandy, one tremor was reported from within the earth.

The tremors were reported from Digana, Aluthwatte and Ambakote areas in Kandy yesterday (06).

One of the tremors was reported from Mahakanadarawa and Pallekele seismic stations.

The Ministry of Environment has announced that seismic stations would only measure seismic activity within the earth. However, the other three tremors were recorded on sensors at the Victoria Reservoir.

Geological Survey and Mines Bureau Chairman Anura Walpola stated that the tremors were caused on the earth's surface not on the interior.

However, Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera instructed the relevant authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the minor tremors that are reported from time to time around the Victoria Reservoir in Kandy.

Previously, tremors were reported in six instances, and an expert committee was appointed by the Environment Minister to probe the events. The Ministry announced that the committee recommended that the attention must be paid to dolomite mining and related explosions.

Meanwhile, following an event held in Walasmulla yesterday (06), journalists inquired from the Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera regarding the occasional termors in the Kandy area.
