Covid patient remanded for spitting on PHI officer in Atalugama

The Covid patient from Atalugama in Bandaragama who had spat on the face of a Public Health Inspector (PHI) has been arrested and remanded.

The man had obstructed the duties and spat on the face of a PHI officer when measures were being taken to transfer him to a hospital on Wednesday (02).

Police Spokesman, DIG Ajith Rohana said the Bandaragama Police had arrested the suspect this morning and he was produced before the Panadura Court via Skype technology.

The Court remanded the man until the 17th of December on charges of obstructing the duties of health officials and for violating the quarantine law.

DIG Ajith Rohana further said that the man will be transported to the Welikada Prison under special protection and adhering to the health guidelines.

Following the incident, PHI, health and area Pradeshiya Sabha Division officials refused to engage in Covid related activities in Atalugama.

The PHI Union said they will refrain to engage in duties until the suspect involved in the spitting incident is arrested and the area residents adhere to their advise, as well as ensuring their safety when performing their services.
