Mahara prison unrest: number of injured inmates increase to 107
Update: The number of injured inmates during the Mahara Prison unrest increased to 107.
Eight prisoners were killed and now more than 100 injured in clashes with guards at the Mahara prison as protest over rising coronavirus infections in prisons have increased.
Inmates have staged protests in recent weeks demanding an increase in coronavirus testing and new isolation facilities for infected prisoners and for cases to be expedited.
The clash at Mahara prison started on Sunday when some inmates protested against prisoners infected by the Covid-19 virus being transferred from other facilities to Mahara.
However, it has been noted in parliament that the protest may have been orchestrated by drug distributors.
