Weather update 01 Dec: Thundershowers exceeding 100mm

Department of Meteorolog states that the depresion over the south-east Bay of Bengal lay centered 590 km east-southeast to Trincomalee at 2330hrs yesterday(30). The system is very likely to intensified into a deep depression during next 06 hours and likely to intensify further into a cyclonic storm during the subsequent 12 hours.

This system is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross eastern coast of Sri Lanka between Batticaloa and Mullaitivu around tomorrow(02) evening.

Showers or thundershowers at times will occur in the Eastern, Northern, Northern-central, and Uva provinces and in Hambanthota and Matale districts. Heavy rainfall above 100mm can be expected at some places.

Showers may occur at several palces in North-western province.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places elsewhere after 2.00p.m.

Cloudy skies can be expected over the island.

Fairly strong gusty winds (30-40) kmph can be expected in Northern, North-Central, Eastern, North-Western and Western provinces.

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

WEATHER FORECAST FOR SEA AREAS AROUND THE ISLAND DURING NEXT 24 HOURS - Issued at 05.30 a.m. on 01 December 2020

Intemittent showers/thundershowers, strong or very strong gusty winds and rough or very rough seas can be expected in the sea areas in between 05N-12N, 82E-92E during next few days.

Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into the deep-sea areas to the East coast of the Island (5N-12N, 82E-92E) until further notice

Fishing and naval community are requested to be vigilant and attentive about future bulletins issued by the Department of Meteorology in next few days.

Condition of Rain:

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the deep sea areas extending from Kankasanthurai to Pottuvil via Trincomalee and Batticaloa.

Winds will be north-easterly in the sea areas around the island and the wind speed will be (30-40) kmph. The wind speed can increase up to (55-60) kmph at times over deep sea area extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Mannar, Kankasanthurai,Trincomalee and Pottuvil and the wind speed can increase up to (50-55) kmph at times over deep sea area extending from Galle to Puttalm via Colombo.

State of Sea:

The sea areas around the island will be slight to moderate. The deep sea areas extending from Kankasanthurai to Pottuvil via Trincomalee can be fairly rough or rough at times. The deep sea areas extending from Galle to Puttalm via Colombo can be fairly rough at times.

There is a possibility that near shore sea areas off the coast extending from Kankesanthurai to Pottuvil via Trincomalee and Batticaloa may experience surges due to the effect of swell waves, having (2.0-3.0) m height.
