Information has come to light that key drug traffickers of the international drug trafficking net, who provide narcotics to Sri Lanka are directly connected to the drug bust in Weligama on Friday (Nov. 20), Sri Lanka Police said.

The Police Special Task Force arrested three suspects along with over 100 kilograms of Heroin in Weligama on Friday (Nov. 20), and a vehicle was also seized during the arrest.

The Police Narcotics Bureau will seek support from INTERPOL to trace the original drug trafficker, Police Spokesperson, Deputy Inspector General Ajith Rohana said on Saturday (Nov. 21).

“It has been revealed and disclosed that the main drug traffickers who provide drugs to Sri Lanka of the international drug trafficking net are connected to this particular detection. The Police Narcotics Bureau is intending to get support from the INTERPOL and other agencies to trace the original drug trafficker who has sent these drugs from a foreign country to Sri Lanka. We are conducting further investigations,” DIG Ajith Rohana noted.

The Police Narcotics Bureau has launched an investigation regarding the three suspects arrested in Weligama; the suspects along with the seized narcotics have been brought to the PNB in Colombo.

According to DIG Ajith Rohana, two suspects from Matara and Weligama have been identified and the third suspect is from Kotikawatte.

The Police Narcotics Bureau and STF are jointly conducting further investigations and the suspects will be produced before the court on Saturday (Nov. 21).

“The suspects will be produced before the magistrates court today. Thereafter, in terms of the provisions of the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, the suspects will be detained at the Police Narcotics Bureau for another seven days in order to conduct further investigations. Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, the Police can request from the court to detain the suspects in the police custody for a period of seven days for further investigations. Accordingly, the Police Narcotics Bureau will make the request today (Nov. 21),” DIG Ajith Rohana further noted.
