Welimada supermarket fined Rs. 500,000 for selling rice above controlled price

A supermarket in Welimada has been fined Rs. 500,000 for selling imported Keeri Samba rice above the government-regulated maximum retail price (MRP).

The fine was imposed following a case filed by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) against the supermarket for selling a kilogram of imported Keeri Samba rice at Rs. 260, exceeding the controlled price of Rs. 255 by Rs. 5.

According to the CAA, the violation was detected during an inspection conducted by officers of the CAA’s Badulla District Office on December 4, 2025.

During the inspection, a CAA investigating officer purchased one kilogram of imported Keeri Samba (GR 11) rice for Rs. 260, confirming that the supermarket had charged Rs. 5 above the stipulated maximum retail price.

The CAA continues to conduct raids and inspections across the country to ensure compliance with regulated prices of essential commodities and protect consumer rights.

The public has been urged to report incidents of overcharging and other violations of consumer protection laws through the CAA hotline 1977.
