The Sri Lanka Police has strongly refuted a false news item circulating on social media alleging corruption linked to procurement processes, stressing that the claims are baseless and damaging to the reputation of Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya.

The post, which accuses a police constable of misconduct and references alleged deals involving shoe polish tins and body cameras, has been described by Police Headquarters as “entirely unfounded.”

Issuing a statement, the Police clarified that the supply of polish tins for officers was awarded strictly through procurement procedures, following newspaper advertisements and recommendations by the Sri Lanka Standards Institute. 

The tender was granted to the institution that submitted the lowest bid, ensuring financial benefit to the Police. Officials emphasized that no personal affiliations influenced the process, and reports linking the Inspector General’s name were “completely false.”

On the matter of body cameras, Police confirmed that procurement procedures have been initiated to equip officers with wearable technology. A total of 26 institutions submitted bids, with 15 providing samples. However, no decision has yet been made to award the tender, which remains under evaluation by the Tender Evaluation Committee.

The Police warned that the circulation of such baseless reports undermines public trust and damages the institution’s reputation. It further stressed that strict legal action will be taken against individuals responsible for spreading false and misleading information.
