More than 5,000 Bharatanatyam dancers set Guinness World Record in Colombo

A historic cultural milestone was achieved in Colombo today as more than 5,000 Bharatanatyam dancers came together to set a Guinness World Record for the largest Bharatanatyam dance lesson.

The event, held at Galle Face Green, was organised by Sangamam Global Academy of India and Samgamizh Liya of Sri Lanka, bringing together thousands of dancers from Sri Lanka, India and several other countries in a celebration of classical dance and cultural heritage.

Participants, dressed in traditional attire, performed synchronised Bharatanatyam movements under the guidance of instructors as part of the official record attempt. Following the performance and adjudication process, the Guinness World Records certificate was formally awarded.

Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha received the Guinness World Records certificate on behalf of the performers and organisers. Addressing the gathering, he congratulated the dancers and organisers on the achievement and highlighted the role of culture in strengthening people-to-people ties between India and Sri Lanka.

The event was attended by Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar and Deputy Ministers Sundaralingam Pradeep and Mahinda Jayasinghe, while a large crowd gathered to witness the record-breaking performance.

Organisers said the initiative aimed to showcase the timeless tradition of Bharatanatyam while promoting cultural exchange and unity across borders.
