Fisheries minister holds high-level talks in Norway on maritime cooperation
A Sri Lankan delegation led by Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar, who is on an official visit to Norway, held a series of high-level discussions yesterday (23) in Oslo with senior officials of the Norwegian Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries.
During the discussions, special attention was given to modernising Sri Lanka’s fisheries sector and enhancing technical knowledge exchange.
In talks with Gunnar Stølsvik, head of the Blue Justice programme, discussions focused on the satellite-based AIS data system provided by the Norwegian government to member countries. The possibility of Sri Lanka accessing this technology free of charge for monitoring fishing vessels and curbing illegal fishing activities was also explored. The Norwegian side also agreed to provide specialised training programmes for officials of the Fisheries Ministry and related departments to ensure effective use of the technology.
Subsequently, discussions were held with Anita Utheim Iversen, head of the Global Action Network on Sustainable Food Security, focusing on improving the nutritional value and quality of fish products. Sri Lanka was formally invited to join the global Food Nutrition and Composition Group, which would provide significant opportunities for institutions such as the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) to access international expertise and technology exchange.
Minister Chandrasekar noted that through this close technical cooperation between Norway and Sri Lanka, the government remains committed to strengthening the fisheries sector with modern technology and upgrading it in line with international standards.
Secretary to the Ministry Dr. B.K. Kolitha Kamal Jinadasa and Director General of Fisheries S.J. Kahawatta also participated in the meetings.
